This authentic antique map of the world in by the Dutch cartographer O. Lindemann, published in 1775. It depicts all the continents and oceans and some major rivers, and details the shoreline of each with ports and major cities.
California is shown as an island off the southwest coast of America with several place names identified. This cartographic misconception came about by way of a 15th century Spanish romance novel and continued through maps and literature into the early years of the 18th century. Continents are named as are countries and territories. In the lower left quadrant, a fan-shaped polar projection offers a focused view of the northern and Polar Regions, areas often omitted or generalized in maps of the period. This inclusion underscores the map's comprehensive scope and the growing interest in polar exploration.
Interestingly, the map minutely describes and details trade winds, magnetic variations, and areas of monsoons and the directions in which they progress. The inclusion of trade winds and magnetic variations make this map a fascinating example of Enlightenment-era cartography. It reflects both the scientific curiosity and geographical understanding of the mid-18th century, an age shaped by exploration, colonization, and an expanding global consciousness.
