This is an authentic antique hand-colored map by J.H. Colton depicting the state of Minnesota not long after it became a state, as well as parts of neighboring states and territories in the early 1850s, including the eastern portion of what became the Dakota Territory in 1861. The map graphically illustrates the border between the nascent development of the mid-west and the wilds of the western United States. Towns, roads, and other signs of progressing settlement are indicated.

At the time, scant information was available of the far northwest, and the Missouri, a few creeks and two forts are the only details shown. Printed at the upper left: "The vast region of Prairies from Red River of the North and Mini Wakan I. to about the Gr. Bend of the Missouri R. is the great Hunting and Fighting Ground of Kdakotah, Odjibwe, Assiniboin, Arikara, Minitarree and other Nations."

Decorative scrollwork border.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition with full margins. Toning on the margins.
