A Correct Map of Ireland Divided into it's Provinces, Counties, and Baronies, Shewing the Roads and Distances of Places in Computed miles by Inspection, where Barraques are Erected & c.

By: John Senex &  Mawell

Date: 1711 (dated) London

Dimensions: 37.5 x 26.25 inches (95.25 x 66.7 cm)

A scarce large map of Ireland with only four known institutional copies that has come on the market only a few times in the last 20 years.

This is 1st state example, was published as part of the composite "World Atlas" by Price, Senex and Maxwell and also sold separately. The map is identified as the first state by the imprint in the title catouch that reads "By Cha: Price at the Archimedes and Globe in Ludgate Street I.Senex & I.Maxwell at ye Globe in Salisbury Court 1711."

Originally printed on two sheets which have been joined the enormity of the map when compared to previous maps made of the green isle allows for considerable detail of the Ireland's geography and physical topography. Original outline color distinguishes each of the many counties and hundreds of towns and villages are named.  Roads are delineated throughout along with "Distances of Places in Computed miles by Inspection, where Barraques are Erected".

In the top left portion of the map a dedication appears to Sir William Robinson Knight in a decorative cartouche that is adorned with a coat of arms and the head of an Irish Deer. The cartouche in the lower right features two cherubs and the Irish harp underneath a royal crown. Sailing ships can be found filling out the otherwise empty spaces of the surrounding seas.

This is a great piece for any Irish map collector, someone looking for a decorative map with age, or anyone with an interest in their Irish ancestry and it shows a large number of towns with clarity.

Condition: This map is in C+ condition with several separations and a mission portion of top right corner that has been filled. The restoration work done on the map is both old and new. There is no significant loss to the original image in any place of cartographic interest.
