1861 Johnson's Europe
By: Johnson & Browning
Date: 1861 (Published) New York
Dimensions: 16 x 24 inches (41 cm x 61 cm)
This is a beautiful hand-colored example of Johnson’s 1861 map of Europe. The map describes the entire continent in minute detail and includes well-detailed adjacent territories map of Asia and Africa. It is especially attractive as he has colored the regions featured in pastels with a border between Europe and Russia in a deeper red. The sea is a pale blue which enhances the visual appeal of the map. Exploratory routes are noted and the area covered by the map is quite large. The map is further enhanced by the strap work border.
Published by A. J. Johnson and Browning as plate numbers 63-64 in the 1861 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas, this is the last edition of the Atlas to bear the ‘Johnson and Browning’ imprint. Later editions reflect Ward’s 1862 acquisition of Browning’s shares in the firm.
Condition: This map is in A condition. There is minor toning of the edges and minor spotting southwest of Ireland.
