1750 Londra. Capitale dell' Inghilterra.
By: Giambattista Albrizi
Date: 1750 (Published) Venice
Dimensions: 6.25 x 12.5 inches (16 x 32 cm)
This lovely small map by Giambattista Albrizi features the center of London in circa 1750, nearly a century before the historic buildings at Westminster, whose origins date to the late 11th century, suffered a serious fire which destroyed much of the earlier structure depicted in the image. An earlier fire had forced Henry VIII, the last monarch to live at Westminster, to move from the palace, which was part of the complex, to the Palace of Whitehall (no longer extant).
The map was drawn from a perspective on the south side of the Thames, to the east of Lambeth Palace, not far from London Bridge. The farthest point to the west on the north side of the river is Whitehall Palace, with the easternmost point the neighborhood in which the Tower of London is located. The historic London Bridge spans the Thames, and many vessels of various kinds and sizes are navigating its waters.
