This remarkable work and others like it are exceeding rare as they were not produced like most other atlases for the general public or university systems. Being done entirely by hand was a truly laborious process that did not become much easier with rapidity. Additionally, many such atlases were not housed in libraries, universities or other institutions, but often times in the homes that produced them, which lends itself to a low survival rate.
This particular example comes with a note folded into an envelope attached to the inside of the front cover. It reads as follows, "These maps were drawn and the writing done by hand by my uncle Laurent Duthil, who was born in Bordeaux, France." Signed Nina Martin of Oakland.
Condition: This atlas is in B+ condition with some obvious wear to the cover boards and original spine. All maps are securely bound within and exhibit lovely original hand coloring on clean paper. A small wormhole is apparent that runs through the second half of the atlas, but in nearly every case, it is outside of the map margins or just within the manuscript text or map border.
