This is an original vintage pictorial map of the historical Champagne region of France, in the northeastern part of the country. The map shows the wine-producing areas of Champagne that lie along the Marne river.
The proximity of the Champagne region to Paris helped when promoting its economic success in wine trading, but also meant its villages and vineyards were often in the path of marching armies on their way to the French capital. In spite of these frequent military conflicts, Champagne developed a reputation for quality wine in the Medieval era, and continued that reputation as its winemakers began to make sparkling wine in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The map shows the winegrowing region of Champagne within a large orange circle, highlighting cities like Epernay and Reims, the region’s unofficial capital. Around the central map are illustrations including a bottle of Champagne, a woman in traditional dress, leaves, trees, as well as more abstracted views of towns and architectural features of cathedrals, including what appear to be rose and lancet windows. At the top is the title text “Les vignobles de France” (“The vineyards of France”), and at the bottom is the subheading “Vins de Champagne” (“Wines from Champagne”).
Sopexa is an international communications and marketing company headquartered in Paris. Founded in 1961, they provide marketing assistance to food and beverage companies. This series of wine maps were produced by Sopexa in collaboration with the Comité National des Vins de France in the 1970s.
