This Ruscelli map in trapezoid form is from his work La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino.  Based on the work of Ptolemy, it depicts Italy, Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia along with various smaller islands. The map is highly detailed, depicting settlements, town and cities, and all regions of Italy are named. Additionally, landmarks, rivers, ports, mountain ranges including the Italian Alps, and Mount Aetna itself in eruption are all denoted. The eastern coast of the Adriatic is described as far south as Dalmatia. Relief is shown pictorially and seas are stippled.

Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566) was an Italian polymath, humanist, editor, alchemist and cartographer active in Venice during the early 16th century. Ruscelli is best known for his important revision of Ptolemy's Geographia, published posthumously in 1574.
