2000 - 2005 Vampires Killers | Original Ghanaian Hand-Painted Movie Banner
DESCRIPTION
Vampires, weapons, and fiery explosions collide in this extraordinary Ghanaian hand-painted movie banner, an explosive example of the artistic imagination that made West Africa’s traveling cinema advertisements famous. Signed by Papa Warsti of Teshie, Accra, the work advertises Vampires Killers for NAME VIDEO of Nungua, presenting a theatrical interpretation of vampire horror in striking reds, yellows, and black.
Beginning in the 1980s, traveling cinema operators and video clubs in Ghana commissioned local painters to advertise films screened on portable video equipment. Working on reused flour-sack cloth, the artists often departed from conventional film publicity, inventing dramatic scenes and exaggerated supernatural figures to attract audiences. These individually painted advertisements have become widely collected examples of Ghanaian popular art.
The banner identifies both its artist and exhibitor, linking it to the Greater Accra cinema trade. Printed flour-sack markings remain visible on the reverse, while pronounced folds, abrasions, and areas of paint loss attest to extensive handling. Its dynamic imagery and original inscriptions make it a compelling survivor of Ghana’s traveling cinema tradition.
