DESCRIPTION

This enticing double-sided TWA route map captures the extraordinary expansion of commercial aviation immediately after World War II, when the airplane was rapidly transforming long-distance travel from an adventure into an increasingly accessible way to cross both the United States and the world.

Across America with TWA

Published by Trans World Airline in 1948, one side presents the company's growing domestic network across the United States. TWA's routes appear as bold red lines radiating between major cities from New York and Washington to Chicago, Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, while thinner lines identify connections operated by other airlines. Mountains, rivers, and cities are joined by playful pictorial vignettes representing regional landmarks, industries, wildlife, and attractions, from the Golden Gate Bridge and Grand Canyon to oil fields, cattle, cotton, Native American imagery, and the industrial cities of the Northeast.

The reverse dramatically expands the journey overseas, tracing TWA's network across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and India. Thick routes connect Shannon, Paris, Geneva, Rome, Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, Dhahran, Bombay, and other destinations, while an inset globe extends the network across the Pacific and into East Asia. Distances are printed directly along many of the routes, giving travelers a tangible sense of a world suddenly being drawn closer together.

The Golden Age of the Constellation

Dominating the international side are two illustrations of TWA's Lockheed Constellation, the sleek four-engine airliner closely associated with the company's postwar expansion. TWA began scheduled transatlantic Constellation service in 1946, and by the time this map appeared two years later the aircraft had become a potent symbol of modern international travel. The map consequently functions as much as advertising as geography: ancient monuments, fashionable European capitals, desert scenes, exoticized regional figures, and distant landmarks are presented as destinations now connected by a modern airline network.

Issued only three years after the end of World War II, the map captures an important moment in aviation history. TWA was presenting itself not merely as an American carrier but as a gateway to a newly accessible world, and the contrast between the dense domestic network on one side and the sweeping intercontinental routes on the other makes that ambition especially clear. Printed in vivid color on both sides, it is an evocative artifact from the early postwar jet-age-to-come, when propeller-driven airliners such as the Constellation were making international travel faster, more comfortable, and more attainable than ever before.
