By: Samuel Augustus Mitchell

Date: 1846 (Published) Philadelphia

Dimensions: 12 x 15 inches (30.5 x 38.1 cm)

This is a very fine example of Mitchells’ highly detailed map of Texas, Mexico and the Southwest, as borders were drawn in 1846.

Austin’s Colony is depicted in Texas as are Austin’s Grant, Washington, Houston, Goliad and a number of other early settlements. Many Indian Tribes of the American West are named, and there are interesting depictions of pre-gold Rush California, the Great Spanish Trail, and the Salt Lake region. The travels of explorer John Fremont in California are shown on the map, and his name is used to identify Fremont Lake. Many early towns and settlements are shown, as are a number of California Missions.

Two inset maps are included, one entitled Guatemala and featuring Central America, with forts, ports, rivers and other features depicted in detail. The other inset is entitled Valley of Mexico, and depicts the great valley with the ancient lake and city at its center. Known cities, settlements, ancient sites and most geographical details are included.

Condition: This colored map is in B+ condition, with even toning and some light foxing.
