Date: 1617 (circa)

Dimensions: 6 x 6.8 inches (15.2 x 17.3 cm)

This Ziegler map is taken directly from an earlier original engraving by Theodor de Bry depicting the meeting of Sir Francis Drake with an American Indian chief in what is believed to be present-day San Francisco in June 1579.

Pictured with an indigenous potentate in the New World, Drake is depicted at the moment he is being crowned by the native king. This event was ostensibly taken to mean that the land had been gifted to the English. The two are surrounded by indigenous peoples dancing and seemingly reveling at the arrival of the Europeans, with tepees and palm trees as a backdrop. Along the beach a well-armed small squadron is seen erecting a sign to claim the land for England. Curious indigenous individuals are seen approaching a large group of very well-armed Europeans, with gifts in arms for them. A number of frigates are pictured a short distance offshore.

Condition: The engraving on this page is in A condition. The remainder of the page on which the text is written shows toning and some rust spots.
