This finely engraved Coronelli map of Iceland is based on the important work of Dutch cartographer Joris Carolus, but with some names and certain topographical features differing from those of the Carolus map.

Iceland was a favorite topic for many important cartographers from the early years of cartography. Once it had been mapped many important cartographers from the early 16th century till the late 18th included it in their oeuvre. Many of these maps bear a strong resemblance to modern-day satellite images of the island, testament to the accuracy of early explorers’ reporting and the ability of cartographers to interpret this information and depict it in map-form.

This example of the map, in Italian, is on the folio sheet with Italian text above and below the image. The famous volcano Hekla is shown actively steaming. Administrative divisions and larger towns and places names are shown, and river systems and the rugged terrain of the island are well depicted.

Condition: This map is in A condition, a crisp impression on beautiful laid paper.
