1951 France : Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais
By: Jean Cheval & Alex Batany
Date: 1951 (Published) France
Dimensions: 39 x 24.5 inches (99 x 62 cm)
This is a mid-century travel poster featuring a beautiful pictorial map of France. The artwork was completed by Jean Cheval & Alex Batany and the work was issued by French Railways (SNCF) in 1951.
The map is curious in that while it promotes the electric railway system of France, it does not include any of the lines that span the country. Instead the map chooses to focus on the wonders, activities, history, and culture of France in an effort to lure travelers to the country. An image of the electric CC 7001 locomotive by P. Bouvry appears at the bottom.
As described by The Rotarian magazine in 1953, "Once upon a time there was a castle. Its picture was sketched upon a large poster map — along with pictures of other castles, knights, cathedrals, bathing beauties, factories, and even a mermaid."
Condition: This vintage travel poster is in A condition with one small tear at the bottom. The pictorial map has been professionally backed with linen for preservation purposes.
