This is an authentic antique map of the Barbary Coast by Abraham Ortelius. The map was published in Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in Vienna Austria in the year 1571.This fine engraving provides a great deal of information on the Barbary Coast in its interiors with great attention to detail. Cities and villages fill the coastal regions along riverbanks that extend to the mountains. Beyond the mountains even more settlements as mapped as the rivers extend to a curious number of lakes within the Sahara desert. The map extends from Morocco to Libya and the western Mediterranean showing the proximity of the Balearic Islands Corsica Sardinia southern Italy and Sicily. Portions of Spain the southern coast of France and much of Italy are also included with little detail given except for notations of the larger or more important cities.
The title is contained in a strapwork panel across the top of the map. Two mystical sea monsters and a sailing ship ornament the map. This is a rather scarce map as only 275 copies of this 1571 Latin edition were printed. How many survived is left to speculation. The map features Latin text on verso with a page number 53.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition with a centerfold separation that has been repaired on verso with archival material. Narrow left margin as issued with some minor soiling.
