Only known example of this mid-19th century large format map of Lansing Iowa, located along the banks of the Mississippi River.
This extremely rare map depicts Lansing, Iowa, a small town on the main course of the Mississippi River. The town was founded in 1851 by James Isham Gilbert, who had been a Union General in the Civil War. The town was platted with a steamboat landing, and early settlers had hopes that the town would become a central hub of commerce on the Mississippi. The town is now a destination for tourists interested in mid-19th century Americana, with a number of original buildings and other historical sites extant.
