DESCRIPTION

Washington and Oregon are depicted together in this excerpted pictorial map from Berta and Elmer Hader's 1932 Picture Book of the States — the final leaf in the book's sequence, closing the atlas's journey across all forty-eight states.

The sheet runs from Washington's Cascade volcanoes and Puget Sound south across the Columbia River to Oregon's Willamette Valley, Crater Lake, and the high desert near the California border. Vignettes trace the region's earliest exploration history, among them Lewis and Clark's route along the Columbia and Drake's 1579 coastal passage, the Pacific margin's earliest European contact. The reverse carries 'A Message from Angelo Patri,' a personal essay by the Italian-American educator whose closing words end the volume.

Berta Hoerner Hader (1890–1976) and Elmer Stanley Hader (1889–1973) were a husband-and-wife illustration team among the most celebrated collaborators in American children's publishing, having won the Caldecott Medal, the highest honor in American children's book illustration, along with two additional Caldecott Honors. Picture Book of the States, their 1932 collaboration with Harper & Brothers, covers forty-eight states and the District of Columbia across twenty-eight illustrated leaves, each paired on its facing page with keyed descriptive text so that map and text could be cross-referenced at a glance. The result renders the American landscape, its industries, natural resources, and notable personalities, in the Haders' characteristic whimsical style, informative and warm at once.

CONDITION
Despite the verso's minimal corner staining and the side of the recto originally bound into the full atlas being mended with tape, this sheet is in fine condition thanks to the combination of its verso's intact margins and still vibrant colors.
