DESCRIPTION

This striking educational chart illustrates the remarkable diversity of marine fishes found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic coast.

Intended as both an identification guide and visual teaching aid, the poster combines precise scientific illustration with bold, highly decorative graphic design. Produced by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, these educational posters were distributed to schools, aquariums, research institutions, and public agencies.

More than forty species are shown swimming within a richly colored underwater environment, each accompanied by a numbered reference identifying its common and scientific names. The illustrations include many of the region's most iconic game and commercial fishes, including sailfish, marlin, tarpon, tuna, mahi-mahi, king mackerel, snapper, grouper, barracuda, sharks, rays, pompano, drum, triggerfish, and numerous reef and coastal species that define the fisheries of the southeastern United States.

The tranquil coastal panorama above the water contrasts beautifully with the bustling marine ecosystem below, while the vivid coloration and exceptional scientific artwork transform what was originally an educational publication into an engaging decorative display. The poster captures the growing public interest in marine conservation and fisheries education that characterized the late twentieth century.
