DESCRIPTION

An uncommon and dramatic Art Deco aviation poster issued by United Airlines during the era of the Golden Gate International Exposition, depicting a gleaming Douglas airliner soaring above the moonlit waters of San Francisco Bay. The composition combines the newly completed San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, illuminated skyline, and celestial night sky to present commercial aviation as the pinnacle of modern technology and progress during the golden age of air travel.

What distinguishes the poster from most surviving airline advertising of the period is its unusual metallic production process. Rather than relying solely on metallic inks, the image appears to have been printed directly onto reflective foil or aluminum-coated stock, creating a luminous silvered surface beneath the printed colors. This technique gives the water, sky, and polished aircraft fuselage an almost cinematic glow, perfectly suited to the futuristic optimism associated with late-1930s aviation and World’s Fair design.

The artwork was created by Clayton Knight, whose streamlined depictions of aircraft helped define the visual identity of early American commercial flight. The DC-3 aircraft bears the designation “U.S. Mail AM 1-11-12 Express,” referencing the federally contracted airmail routes that formed the backbone of the American airline industry during the 1930s.

Produced at a moment when San Francisco was being celebrated internationally as a symbol of engineering achievement and transpacific modernity, the poster stands among the most visually sophisticated examples of prewar airline advertising, combining aviation art, Art Deco design, and innovative printing technology into a striking vision of America’s emerging age of modern air travel.

CONDITION
Poster is in fine to very fine condition with some diagonal creases across two corners, a few staple holes in the margins and damp-staining that is only visible on the verso. Overall image quality is quite striking and beautiful.
