DESCRIPTION

This is an excellent example of the 1987 “Taste of Chicago” festival poster advertisement, created for the City of Chicago’s 150th anniversary celebration.

It was produced by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events in cooperation with the Illinois Restaurant Association and the Chicago Park District, during the administration of Mayor Harold Washington, whose name appears at the bottom margin. The event was held in Grant Park from June 28 to July 5, 1987, running daily from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The artwork features a collage-style diner shaped like a giant coffee cup, filled with classic food imagery and brand logos such as Old Style, Budweiser, and Maxwell House, symbolizing the city’s culinary diversity. Surrounding it are festive crowds, fireworks, and the Chicago skyline, including the Sears Tower and Marina City towers, representing the city’s vibrancy and growth. The poster captures the celebratory energy of 1980s Chicago, combining nostalgia, civic pride, and the spirit of urban renewal under the late Harold Washington.
