1985 "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" Ukrainian Puppet Theater Poster
DESCRIPTION
Ukrainian poster advertising the Poltava Regional Puppet Theater's production of Ali-Baba ta Sorok Rozbiinykiv; in English "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves."
On the large vase centered in the illustration, the production's title is written in stylized bright red Cyrillic block letters alongside credits for its playwright (A. Kolesnikov) and source material (The Thousand and One Nights). On the smaller vase to the left, the poster credits the director A. M-oshov (name partly illegible), Designer Viktor Kozub, and Composer Vasyl Yakubovych. The text at the top of the poster clarifies in Ukrainian that the production is sanctioned by the Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR and that it is being put on by the Poltava Regional Puppet Theatre. In the top right, dimension measurements taken by a former owner are written in with what appears to be a light red colored pencil.
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
This classic tale centers around a poor woodcutter named Ali Baba (here shown riding atop a donkey) overhearing of a password to the band of thieves' trove of riches. This poster depicts a later scene where the thieves attempt to break into Ali Baba's house by hiding inside oil jars.
Ukrainian Heading
The sponsoring ministry and theater are named here in Ukrainian. That is not a given. On an earlier poster for the same theater’s production of The Star-Child issued under the same Soviet ministry, the header is in Russian—the language of Soviet administration. In October 1989 Ukrainian became the state language of the Ukrainian SSR.
