1940s Spanish Nationalist Generals & Military Leaders – Illustrated Ration Sheets
DESCRIPTION
Eleven vividly colored portraits assemble a remarkable gallery of military figures associated with the Nationalist victory and the early Franco regime.
The portraits identify generals Andrés Saliquet, Alfredo Kindelán, Fidel Dávila Arrondo, Carlos Martínez de Campos, Antonio Aranda Mata, José Moscardó Ituarte, Esteban-Infantes, and Emilio Mola Vidal, as well as Colonel José Hungría, head of the SIPM military intelligence service, Colonel Adolfo Prada Vaquero, and politician José María Gil-Robles of the conservative Catholic CEDA coalition. Mola was a principal organizer of the 1936 military uprising, while Moscardó became celebrated in Nationalist accounts for his defense of the Alcázar of Toledo. The combination of famous commanders and lesser-known figures gives the collection particular depth.
Spanish food rationing began in 1939, following the Civil War, and continued until 1952. Ration coupons were issued by local authorities and relief organizations to regulate the distribution of scarce food supplies. Printed in perforated sheets, each coupon specified a particular food item or quantity and entitled its holder to purchase that allowance at an officially regulated price. Merchants collected or invalidated the coupons when the food was distributed. The surviving coupon designs reference communities and aid programs including Cáceres, Salamanca, Ceuta, Vera (Almería), and La Riba (Tarragona).
Eleven associated ration panels represent communities such as Villafranca de los Barros, Elche, Llanes, Cubelles, Tudela, Sueca, and Lucena. Several are dated 1942–1943, documenting postwar rationing under Franco rather than the Civil War itself. The portraits’ exact printing date and their relationship to the coupons have not been independently established.
Offered as one complete group: Eleven illustrated sheets with eleven accompanying coupon sheets. Sheets retain visible perforations; light toning, creases, and handling wear are present. Exact printing technique and production dates have not been verified.
