1940s German Condor Legion Aviation – Spanish Civil War Illustrated Ration Sheets
DESCRIPTION
Seven dramatic aviation illustrations recall the German aircraft and personnel associated with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War.
The Condor Legion was the German military formation sent to support Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces between 1936 and 1939. This set includes illustrations of aircraft identified with German aviation, including the Messerschmitt Bf 110, Junkers Ju 52, and Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, together with scenes of ground crews and maintenance. The subjects evoke the rapid technological changes in military aviation and the foreign intervention that made the Spanish Civil War an international conflict. German aerial operations included the notorious bombing of Guernica in 1937.
Spanish food rationing began in 1939, following the Civil War, and continued until 1952. Ration coupons were issued by local authorities and relief organizations to regulate the distribution of scarce food supplies. Printed in perforated sheets, each coupon specified a particular food item or quantity and entitled its holder to purchase that allowance at an officially regulated price. Merchants collected or invalidated the coupons when the food was distributed. The surviving coupon designs reference communities and aid programs including Cáceres, Salamanca, Ceuta, Vera (Almería), and La Riba (Tarragona).
