This is an authentic antique map of the Bay and Port of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. The map was published by Jean-Baptiste d'Après out of Paris in 1775.

Trincomelee is located on the east coast of Sri Lanka some 110 miles northeast of Kandy. Not only was Trincomelee one of the main centers of Tamil speaking culture in Ceylon, it was also a very important sea port for many world powers from the 17th century all the way up through WWII. The harbor, the fifth largest natural harbor in the world, is overlooked by terraced highlands, its entrance is guarded by two headlands, and there is a carriage road along its northern and eastern edges.

While the map is lacking in displaying inland geographical information, it excels in marine detail. The coastline is exceptionally presented with numerous bays, ports, river outlets, harbors, anchorages, water hazards, and depth soundings are noted throughout. Outside of the map, sailing instructions, coastal profiles, and references aid in making this map a very useful tool to any ship entering the bay and port of Trincomelee.

Condition: Map is in A condition, with light browning confined to the wide margins and lovely hand coloring.
