This is an authentic, antique map that was published by Henri Chatelain in his Atlas Historique, which was one the most widely distributed atlases of the early 18th century.
The map is largely derived from Guillaume d’Isle’s 1703 map and is rich in information. Chatelain takes great pains to illustrate Canada’s physical geography, and provides a thorough accounting of the many rivers and lakes of the area. The map also defines the territories of the local Native American tribes and many French and English settlements are labeled.
Though this map is quite accurate for the period, it does contain a notable error by including the fictitious Rivière Longue, which is shown to be extending westward through the interior of the continent. The existence of Rivière Longue was widely accepted as fact in the early 18th century, due to a French explorer Baron Lahontan, who reported its existence in his popular travel narrative.
Condition: This map is in A condition with exceptional hand coloring and fairly narrow side margins.
