DESCRIPTION

This hand-drawn folding map pays equal attention to both the aquatic and terrestrial geography of South Florida. Its verso charts auto routes, waterways, neighborhoods, and points of interest across greater Miami and West Palm Beach while its recto maps fishing points, keys, lighthouses, low-tide depths, shoals, and reefs throughout Florida Bay and Key West.

In mapping South Florida's metropolises, this map overlays transportation routes with concentric circles whose radii mark 3-mile intervals from each city's center. In the case of Miami, these circles overlap with the smaller outlying cities of Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. The fact that these proximity markers continue into the Atlantic Ocean rather than cease at the coastline shows the mapmaker's cognizance that South Florida's  culture and economy are just as built on water as dry land. This perspective is especially evident in the fact that its recto pays hardly any attention to dry land and focuses instead on communicating information that could be useful to fishermen or sailors. At a certain distance into the ocean however, it seems that Garbush lost either interest or reliable data and chose instead to fill that space with a nice picture of a palm tree.
