DESCRIPTION

A delightful blend of aviation promotion and traditional Indian artistry, these Air-India route map fans embody the glamour of international air travel during the early Jet Age. Produced as advertising souvenirs, they transform a simple hand fan into both a decorative object and a cartographic statement, celebrating the growing reach of India's national airline across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

The obverse of each fan features a stylized route map centered on India, with Air-India's expanding network radiating outward to major cities such as London, Rome, Cairo, Moscow, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, and Nairobi. Rendered in bold colors with simplified continental forms and bright route lines, the maps emphasize connectivity rather than geography, presenting India as an emerging crossroads of global air travel. Created at a time when overseas flying remained an exclusive and aspirational experience, the design conveyed a sense of speed, sophistication, and modernity to prospective travelers.

The reverse sides celebrate India's rich artistic heritage through colorful scenes inspired by traditional miniature painting and folk art. Elegant dancers, musicians, royal figures, and decorative floral motifs provide a striking contrast to the modern transportation themes found on the map side. This juxtaposition of ancient culture and contemporary aviation became a hallmark of Air-India's advertising campaigns, which were widely regarded among the most creative and visually distinctive in the airline industry.

Although originally intended as ephemeral promotional pieces for travel agencies, exhibitions, and airline offices, few such fans survive today. Their fragile paper construction and everyday use resulted in high attrition rates, making surviving examples increasingly scarce. As both cartographic curiosities and artifacts of commercial aviation history, these fans capture a moment when airlines sold not merely transportation, but the romance of seeing the world.
