DESCRIPTION

A striking example of mid-century airline advertising, this folding Pennsylvania Central Airlines route map combines dramatic graphic design, aerial photography, and detailed cartography to promote commercial aviation across the industrial heartland of the United States.

A Network in the Clouds

The map's most memorable feature is its large decorative route diagram, which presents Pennsylvania Central Airlines' network against a dreamlike backdrop of clouds and aerial photographs. Cities including Chicago, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Baltimore, Washington, Norfolk, Traverse City, Sault Ste. Marie, and Williamsport appear as glowing destinations connected by bold orange air routes. The composition conveys both the speed and modernity of air travel, while the floating city views create the sensation of looking down from an aircraft window. Dominating the design is PCA's distinctive compass rose logo, reinforcing the airline's role in guiding travelers across the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Mapping the Route System

The reverse contains eight detailed route charts covering the airline's principal services, including Chicago to Grand Rapids, Detroit to Milwaukee, Pittsburgh to Buffalo, Washington to Buffalo, Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, and other key segments. These maps identify airports, highways, railroads, waterways, and communities served by PCA while incorporating small vignette illustrations highlighting local landmarks and regional character. Together they transform what could have been a simple timetable into an engaging travel guide, encouraging passengers to view each stop as a destination worthy of exploration.

Pennsylvania Central Airlines

Founded in 1940, Pennsylvania Central Airlines grew rapidly during the wartime and postwar expansion of commercial aviation. The airline specialized in connecting medium-sized cities that were often bypassed by larger transcontinental carriers, helping integrate the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Mid-Atlantic into the emerging national air transportation network. Throughout the booklet, advertisements from Gulf Oil emphasize the close relationship between airlines and the petroleum industry, promoting Gulf gasoline and lubricants as the exclusive fuel products used by PCA aircraft. The accompanying text celebrates aviation as one of the defining achievements of the modern age, reassuring travelers about the safety, speed, and reliability of commercial flight while presenting air travel as a glimpse into the future.
