Extending from the North Sea to Switzerland, it depicts the frontier separating the Allied and German armies, with particular emphasis on France's Maginot Line and Germany's Siegfried Line. These immense fortification systems were widely regarded as the defining military obstacles of the coming conflict, and their prominent depiction reflects contemporary expectations that the war in the west would resemble the trench warfare of 1914-1918.
The Battlefield from Above
Rather than employing a conventional planimetric layout, the map utilizes shaded relief to create the impression of viewing the landscape from an aircraft.
