This is an authentic, antique map by Joseph H. Colton featuring on the Territories of New Mexico and Utah and parts of surrounding regions. It is the first atlas map to focus on the two territories that would later become New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.

The map extends from Oregon and Nebraska in the north and extends to lower California, northern Mexico and Texas in the south. Features such as forts, Indian tribes, expansive counties, mountains, rivers and lakes are all clearly depicted. Early Mormon settlements can be found around Great Salt Lake, many of which were established in relative secrecy less than 10 years prior to the publication of this map.

Additionally, this map presents the history of expeditions, their routes, and important events associated with them. These include Fremont's 1844 and 1845 Routes, the Spanish trail from Los Angeles to New Mexico, part of the Oregon Trail, the Stansbury Expedition of 1850, Kearney's Route during the Mexican-American War, Col. Washington's Expedition, the Cimarron Route and the location where Capt. Gunnison was ambushed and killed by the Ute Indians during a surveying expedition to define a route for the first trans-continental railroad.

Condition: This map is in A condition with bright colors on clean paper and full margins on all sides with no holes or tears.
