1640 Galliae Veteris Typus

This is a superb uncolored example of Jan Jansson's map of Gaul, derrived from earlier work by Abraham Ortelius showing the region as it was understood in classical antiquity. The map includes the territories of modern-day France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of Switzerland and Germany.
Prominent Roman provinces, such as Aquitania, Lugdunensis, Belgica, and Narbonensis, are clearly labeled. Major rivers, mountain ranges, and Roman towns or settlements are marked, offering a comprehensive view of the region during the Roman Empire. The map features two decorative cartouches. The lower-left cartouche bears the title of the map, Galliae Veteris Typus, within an ornate frame. The upper-right cartouche contains a textual explanation about the source of the map’s nomenclature. The coastlines, rivers, and regions are depicted with remarkable detail, while artistic flourishes, such as trees and mountain ranges, enhance the map's aesthetic appeal.
Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) was a significant figure in the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, often working alongside or in competition with the Blaeu family. By the early 17th century, he began reissuing and publishing maps for his own atlases, which were often revisions or adaptations of earlier works by Ortelius and other notable cartographers. This was likely published in an early edition of Jansson's Atlas Novus, where some maps still featured blank versos.
Condition: Map is in A condition with one small marginal tear at bottom center that has been repaired on the verso. It maintains superb eye-appeal in its original uncolored state offering a bold print imporession on bright and clean paper with full margins on all sides.
