1919-1921 Peerless 6 Inch Globe by: Weber Costello, Co.
By: Weber Costello Co.
Date: 1919 - 1921 (circa) Chicago, IL
Dimensions: 6 inch diameter
This is a handsome little Peerless 6 inch Terrestrial Globe manufactured by Weber Costello Co. out of Chicago in 1919-21.
Though this globe bares a patent copyright date of Aug 3, 1909, several geographic factors leas us to suspect this globe was produced just after WWI. For instance, the globe presents the geo-political result of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles in Europe which created the Polish Corridor, Balkan States, and Czechoslovakia. Additionally, Russia has not yet changed its name to the Soviet Union, which would occur in 1922.
Other geographic points of interest include, Korea as "Chosen," the Hawaiian Islands duly recognized as the Sandwich Islands, Istanbul as Constantinople, Beijing as Peking, Iran as Persia, Ethiopia as Abyssinia, the Commonwealth of Australia and the Dominion of Canada.
Condition: Globe is in fine condition with several breaks in the paper, especially along the equator. Additionally, the globe sits precariously on its wire stand with the original lower support stuck inside. While it presents nicely as is, it should be handled sparingly and with care unless restored.
