A handsome antique map of Des Moines, Iowa published in 1875 by Andreas Atlas Co. based out of Chicago, IL.
The city is bisected by the Des Moines river and divided into seven wards with blocks numbered and lettered. Government owned land plots are also numbered and individual land owners of larger plots are recognized by name. The Iowa state house, cemeteries, markets, squares, and public grounds are noted and railroad lines that include the Valley Railroad to Keokuk, the Chicago Rock Island Pacific, and several others leading to Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, and Fort Dodge are delineated throughout the map.
The map offers a historical snapshot of the city during a period of rapid growth from about 500 residents in 1850 to approximately 16,000 at the time of publication. Much of that population growth occurred after the Civil War when the Valley railroad from Keokuk, Iowa (situated along the Mississippi River) was completed in August of 1866. Surrounded by seemingly unlimited agricultural resources and with active coal mines within about the city limits, supported by a network of railroad lines extending in all directions, Des Moines was well positioned for impressive grow into the 20th century.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition exhibiting a lovely blue color on paper that is lightly toned throughout. A spot of oxidation is near center-right is a sign of age and authenticity.
