This is a scarce and beautiful hand-colored lithograph map of Chattanooga Tennessee, published by G. Hopkins out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The map spans from the Georgia state line and Lookout Mountain in the south Hill City in the north and Mission Ridge in the east. Surrounding towns are colored and named, and wards in the city proper are numbered. The hachures that illustrate mountain ridges around Chattanooga offer depth and an accurate representation of the varied topography that surrounds the city. The Tennessee River snakes its way through the map and is only traversed by a single bridge and two ferries. A proposed railway would connect the Memphis and Charleston Railroad with the with several others on the south side of the river.
This map is one of the earliest obtainable maps to focus on the city of Chattanooga and is a testament to the days of the late 19th century not only through the visualization of the city, but also the fonts used in the title cartouche and the style of the compass rose that sits below.
Condition: This map is in very fine condition with no significant tears and beautiful hand color over a dark print on clean paper with full margins. A small area of damp-staining is apparent at bottom center but does not distract from the overall image.
