A dramatic cartographic depiction of the progress of railroads in America at the end of the 19th century. This antique railroad map presents the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (a.k.a. the Burlington Route) from Chicago to terminuses in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Billings, Montana.
Examining the Railroad Map
As noted in the title, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad lines are delineated in have black lines. Railways belonging to other companies are shown in alternate colors, the most widely recognized being the Union Pacific Railroad, which is depicted in red. Counties are divided and named with many towns receiving railroad service noted throughout. Upon close examination, we can find several Native American reservations distinguished in black lettering and an all capitalized and italic font. Some such reservations include, the Pine Ridge Agency, the Standing Rock Reservation, North Cheyenne Reservation, and the Wind River or Shoshone Reservation, to name a few.
About the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad
The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad began as a local railroad operating out of Aurora, Illinois in 1849. By the end of the America Civil War it ran exclusively in Illinois from Chicago to several locations along the Mississippi River. Following the war and the opening of the American west, John Murray Forbes and Charles E. Perkins managed a great expansion through consolidation and acquisition of other railroads. In 1868 the CB&Q crossed the Mississippi at Burlington and Quincy to extend its reach into Iowa and Missouri. By the time of this map's publication, the railroad had expanded beyond Nebraska and South Dakota to the eastern range of the Rocky Mountains.
Condition: This map is in A condition, folded as issued but now laying flat with no major tears, fold separations, or holes along fold intersections. The worst tear is in the lower left corner where there is no loss to the image. Print is dark and legible with original color on clean paper and full margins on all sides.
