1764 Carte De L'Islande
DESCRIPTION
This elegant of Iceland by Bellin was published as part of his ‘Le Petit Atlas Maritime…’, which covered the world to the extent it was known and is one of the finest marine atlases of its time.
This map features a detailed view of Iceland, oriented west by its compass rose. It is based on an earlier map by Niels Horrebow, who, sent by the Danish king, spent two years exploring and charting the island, its coastlines and terrain. Almost 100 place names are delineated, with some from Horrebow and others from earlier maps, especially that of Gerhard Mercator. Rhumb lines radiate from a point in the lower left corner.
