La France Divisee En Ses Douze Anciens Gouverenments Et En Ses Vingt Quatre Nouveaux.

By: Henri Abraham Chatelain

Date: 1719 (Published) Amsterdam

Dimensions: 13.5 x 17.5 inches (34.3 x 44.5 cm)

This finely engraved chart is from Chatelain’s Atlas Historique, which was published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720, and is one of the most famous and prolific cartographic works of the early 18th century.

The chart features France as it was divided in early times with its twelve regions and seats of government, and as it  had come to be in Chatelain’s time, with an additional twenty four ‘new ones’. Thus there are coats of arms and descriptions of all thirty six, including naming the capital city of each region. For example, ‘Le Lionnois’, in which the modern city of Lyon is located, is described as being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with wonderful architecture and beautiful palaces, etc. Chatelain notes in the only ‘Remarque’ on the chart that his work is based on France as it was in 1700.

Condition: This chart on watermarked, hand-laid paper is in A condition with some light paper toning.
