A superb example of Lucas Fielding's map of Maine published in one of the more scarce American atlases of the early 19th century.
The map shows Maine just three years after receiving statehood and joining the Union. As is the case today, the majority of the population resides along the coast and major rivers. The cartographic makeup of the northern portion of the state is still largely unknown with only a handful of lakes and rivers mapped and a complete absence of topographical detail that exists in the south. At the time of publication, the state was made up of nine counties as opposed to sixteen today.
This map comes from one of a few of the last atlases to utilize engraved plates to print their maps. Much of the world would soon turn to Lithography which allowed changes and updates to be made with the ease necessary for a country like the United States which had just begun what would be a 70+ year era of westward expansion and development. While the technology used was one that would soon fade away, Fielding's artistic style would set a trend followed by many American map makers, and is emblematic of 19th century map making.
Condition: This map is in A condition with with one small tear in the top margin that has been repaired on the verso. There are no significant stains or foxing, the color is bold and presents beautifully upon naturally aged and sturdy paper.
