This pictorial map of Oceania is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

The map shows Australia, the southern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand, South America, and Mexico. It includes many of the archipelagos of the region, including the Solomon Islands, the Marquises, and the Hawaiian Islands. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. At the bottom of the print is an illustration of explorer Samuel Wallis meeting the people of Tahiti. Wallis made the first recorded visit of a European navigator to Tahiti. Also included are Tahitian dancers, the chief of the Marquisian Island of Nuka-Hiva, Easter Island heads, a Maori man, a Papuan warrior, and portraits of explorers Aristide Aubert du Petit-Thouars and Louis Antoine de Bougainville.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
