This pictorial map of Alaska is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.
Showing the Alaskan region, as well as a section of western Canada, Kamchatka, and eastern Siberia, the map includes the city of Juneau and the Aleutian Islands. Around the map are vignettes showing historical scenes and figures. The right side of the map features a portrait of James Cook, who visited south-central Alaska in 1778 during his search for the Northwest Passage. Also pictured are Alaskan landscapes, featuring polar bears, penguins (despite there being no penguins at the northern poles), seals, whales, and narwhals. The bottom right corner shows a Samoyed and an Eskimo (despite Samoyeds being indigenous to north-central Russia, not the area pictured on the map).
The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
