This pictorial map of the continental United States is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.
Showing the 48 states of the continental United States, the map highlights important cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as the capital cities of each state. In the lower right corner is a cartouche showing the cape of Massachusetts, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Rhode Island. The left side of the map shows a depiction of a colonist interacting with indigenous people. Interestingly, the lower right corner of the map shows two viking ships, possibly referencing the expedition of Leif Erikson, the first European to step foot on the North American continent. The upper right corner contains Celtic designs.
The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
