This pictorial map of the Middle East, South Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.
The Arabian Peninsula, Iran, and India take up the center of the map, highlighting important cities of the regions like Delhi, Caboul (Kabul), and la Mecque (Mecca). Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The Krak des Chevaliers in Syria is shown at the top of the print, one of the most important preserved medieval castles in the world. Also pictured are the Palace of Delhi, the Taj Mahal, and the crucifixion of Jesus.
The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
