1968 Love Poster
DESCRIPTION
A warm, vintage inspirational poster about Love featuring a quote by René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke, better known as Rainer Maria Rilke. An Austrian poet and novelist, Rilke is "widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets." He wrote both verse and highly lyrical prose and several acclaimed critics have described Rilke's work as "mystical."
In this work, presenting a mother holding hands with her children on a beach while watching the sun set on another day, Rilke is quoted as follows, "Love consists in this...that two solitudes protect and touch and greet each other."
Looart was founded in 1947 by Orin Loo out of the family garage, whom had early success creating greeting cards. Orin's wife Miriam then started a company called Current that sold “Post-A-Notes” in bulk to local churches advertising them as a fundraising item. In the 1960s Orin and Miriam’s sons, Dusty and Gary merged the two companies to for the Looart Press which would produce remarkable travel posters and prints among other items until the business sold in 1987 for $115 million.
