DESCRIPTION
This is an original vintage travel poster by Colorado Springs-based company Looart Press, produced in the late 1960s.
This print shows a matador and bull in action in an arena. Wearing a traje de luces, or “suit of lights,” the matador is shown as he pulls the cloak (capote) away from the charging bull. The bull pictured is likely a Spanish Fighting Bull, a species native to the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish-style bullfighting is one of the most instantly recognizable of traditional Spanish events. The title text “Spain” in a highly-stylized red font with white borders.
With beautiful coloring and fine composition, this vintage print of Spain is a sterling example of a 1960s travel poster.
Looart was founded in 1947 by Orin Loo out of the family garage, whom had early success creating greeting cards. Orin's wife Miriam then started a company called Current that sold “Post-A-Notes” in bulk to local churches advertising them as a fundraising item. In the 1960s Orin and Miriam’s sons, Dusty and Gary merged the two companies to for the Looart Press which would produce remarkable travel posters and prints among other items until the business sold in 1987 for $115 million.
