Black & white Portrait of Nathaniel Banks, who was and American politician from Massachusetts and a Union general during the Civil War. Banks was appointed as one of the first "political" major generals by Lincoln, but suffered numerous setbacks and failures as a military leader including a defeat at the hand of Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah River Valley. 

After the Civil War, Nathaniel Banks returned to the political scene and played a role in southern reconstruction efforts and was a prominent supporter of Manifest Destiny, the purchase of Alaska from the Russians, and the Women's Suffrage Movement.
