A fascinating Dutch satirical engraving published in 1720 during one of Europe's greatest financial crises, when rampant speculation in the French Mississippi Company and Britain's South Sea Company led to spectacular financial collapses. Scottish financier John Law's ambitious scheme to generate wealth through paper currency and colonial trade helped fuel the frenzy, while similar speculation spread across Britain and the Dutch Republic. The resulting scandals inspired an extraordinary wave of satirical prints mocking the greed and foolishness of investors.
The engraving presents the financial frenzy as an elaborate theatrical performance, with a devilish figure presiding over the speculators at center stage beneath an ornate canopy. Surrounding this central scene are numerous smaller illustrations filled with classical gods, allegorical figures, and episodes of financial deception and ruin. The crowded imagery transforms the speculative mania into a grand spectacle of human folly, while a lengthy satirical verse beneath the engraving reinforces its warnings against greed and dishonesty.
Published in Amsterdam as part of Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid (The Great Mirror of Folly), the print belongs to one of the most celebrated collections of financial satire ever produced. Its theatrical design draws upon the familiar notion that the world is a stage, with each participant ultimately receiving the consequences of his actions.
