An impressive and large pictorial map of Cleveland Ohio, dubbed here as the "Forest City," by Arthur B. Suchy. The map was published by the Du Bois Press out of Rochester, New York in 1928.
From West 59th Street to East 40th Street, Suchy presents the city of Cleveland Ohio in a very pleasing style, with subtle orange and yellow colors, bordered by the blue Lake Erie to the north. Important places and monuments are represented throughout by pictorial vignettes as well as a numbered legend that can be found in the lower right corner of the map.
In the top right, an open book tells the story of General Moses Cleveland, who founded the city during a surveying expedition in 1796. The opposite corner features a wind-head, compass rose, and several ships and lighthouses representative of the Great Lakes during the 1920s. Places of interest that are rendered pictorially include the City Zoo at Brookside Park, the Cleveland Airport, Westside Marketplace, Cleveland Museum of Art, Euclid Beach Park, and the Circus Grounds, to name a few.
Arthur B. Suchy (1899-1995) was a graphic illustrator and pictorial map maker that was very active from 1920 - 1940. Born a son of Cleveland Ohio, he made several accurate map representing the City, State of Ohio, as well as a map of Colgate College, where he was once a student. Other works include his pictorial map of Miami and Cayo Hues - Key West. He was know to be a collector of maps, photographs, prints and other visual art materials.
Condition: This map is in A condition, with bold coloring, full margins and very few minor imperfections. Issued folding, the map has been professionally flattened and linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes.
