This striking double map of Levantine territories in antiquity was issued hand-colored for the third edition of the Atlas to be published in America.
The map to the left is entitled Canaan, with Part of Egypt, during the Residence of the Israelites in the Desert. It depicts territory from Phoenicia in the north to Egypt and a region to the west of the Red Sea which is entitled Arabia Citra. It extends south and east to the middle of the Arabian desert (Peninsula). Territories are labeled, mountain ranges and rivers are denoted, and separate campsites designated. An inset in the upper left is entitled for of the Camp of the Israelites, with the tribes and their positions noted. The center is occupied by a rectangular area in which are labeled the features of the camp’s tabernacle.
The map to the right is entitled Canaan, Subsequent to its Conquest by the Israelites, and its Division among the Tribes. The map covers less territory but is more detailed in place and peoples’ names. The inset in its upper right features Jerusalem in some detail, including places such as Golgotha, Calvary, etc.
Condition: Some wear to the upper right edge of the margin, slight toning of the centerfold, and short separation at bottom of centerfold which can easily by repaired.
