1944 Indians of the U.S.A.
DESCRIPTION
This rare pictorial map is by Louise E. Jefferson, one of the few women cartographers in history, and surely one of the first if not the first African-American woman to be involved in cartography.
The border of the map is especially creatively designed, and includes names of tribes across the top and bottom while the side borders contain imagery from a wide variety of tribes and indigenous peoples. The map represents serious research on the part of its maker, as many of the tribes represented do not figure in the list of those most commonly known. Images include Indians themselves, canoes, housing of various kinds, handicrafts and arts of the Indians, to mention only a few. Additional vignettes provide historical facts of interest regarding Native American and Western American history.
