This authentic folding vintage map of California was published in 1949 for the California State Fair. It covers a portion of the state in which Gold Rush activities took place, including many sites of interest to tourists.
The map details many of the trails which developed during the Gold Rush era, and pictures the towns and landmarks which were part of it. Sites are depicted pictorially and described in brief, often humorous notes showcasing the history and culture of the region of central California known as the Mother Lode.
The map highlights a route running from Mariposa to Sierraville which includes the Lake Tahoe region and would be of use to travelers who wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of the state as well as learn something of the state’s history. Used as a road map, it would take tourists through towns and historic landmarks, including Yosemite Park.
The verso promotes Bank of America as California’s ‘Statewide Bank’, and includes additional information about the state’s history, including pictorial vignettes, photos and descriptive text regarding the Gold Rush era.
